MAT RATS CLASS 1A PREVIEW 2012-2013
FAVORITES: ZUMBROTA-MAZEPPA COUGARS and the CHATFIELD GOPHERS
The Cougars of Zumbrota-Mazzepa should be a favorite in 1A with the experience back from their 22-12 campaign and section championship. They have six section place winners returning including four state qualifiers along with eight others with a great deal of varsity experience. They will have eight wrestlers returning with 20 wins or more. This young team gained a whole lot of experience from their two state tourney dual last season. With the graduation of just one senior look for this team to make huge strides over the course of the season. They should challenge for conference honors and looking to defend their section 1A title. Joey Majerius, Mitchell Watkins, Cody Heitman, Dillon Downes should be their key leaders thru out the state tourney.
The Gophers of Chatfield should make a strong challenge for both conference and section honors. Back from their 22-7 campaign are eight section place winners of which three were state qualifiers, two of them were state place winners. They also have four others with a great deal of varsity experience returning. They had earned the number one seed in last year's dual meet campaign and they were upset. Despite the graduation of five seniors including three section place winners they will be looking to challenge for both conference and section honors. Justin Viss, Hank Friedricks, Alex Hoffner, Harvey Friedricks and A. J. Riley should be their leaders thru out the season.
DARK HORSES: KENYON-WANAMINGO KNIGHTS and the LAKE CITY TIGERS
The Knights of Kenyon-Wanamingo could make a challenge as they have back a good bunch from their 20-5 campaign. They have six section place winners including one state qualifier and seven others with a great deal of varsity experience. Despite the fact that they graduated seven including two state champions. This young team should continue to improve over the course of the season. They should have a major impact both the conference and the section dual meet campaigns. Alex Jackson, Drew Sathrum, Luke Rechtzigel, Jace Clawiter and Nick Langer should be their key leaders thru out the season. Also the return of Wayne Henslin from medical issues will be a huge boost for the Knights. Wayne was 29-12 and 2nd in section two years ago.
The Tigers of Lake City have back from last year's 9-11 dual meet campaign six section place winners including two state qualifiers and seven others with a great deal of varsity experience. Despite the graduation of three section place winners including two state place winners. Look for the Tigers to improve on their dual meet numbers and to make a strong challenge for a top four spot in this section dual meet campaign. Will Balow, Andrew Schmidt, Carston Dammann and Shane Siewert should be their key leaders thru out the season.
Look for the Wildcats of Goodhue and the Falcons of Wabasha-Kellogg to push for a top four spot in the section. There are four state tourney medal winners back from last season; including Joe Majerus earned third place, Will Balow earned fifth place, Hank Friedericks earned fifth place and Justin Viss earned sixth place. There are a total of twenty state qualifiers returning from last year's state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are: Porter Sercist, Eric Norgrant and Zach Shepherd of Wabasha-Kellogg, Mitchell Breuer of Goodhue; Sam McPhail of Pine Island, Cody Ball and Daniel Chavez of St. Charles, Brock Franko and Lucas Etchason of Triton and Dakota Welsh of Dover-Eyota.
